Mandy Wiener: A Leading Voice in Journalism and Literature
Mandy Wiener is one of South Africa’s most esteemed and credible journalists and authors, celebrated for her investigative prowess and compelling storytelling.
From 2004 to 2014, Mandy served as a multi award-winning reporter with Eyewitness News, delivering reports for Talk Radio 702, 567 Cape Talk, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, and Kfm. She has a keen focus on investigative reporting and legal affairs, having extensively covered high-profile cases like the corruption trial of former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi and the Brett Kebble murder trial. Mandy is renowned for her in-depth coverage of South Africa’s ‘Underworld’, including reports on Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir, Teazers boss Lolly Jackson, and other enigmatic murders.
Mandy has earned numerous accolades, including multiple National and Regional Vodacom ‘Journalist of the Year’ awards, the prestigious ‘CNN African Radio Journalist of the Year’ award, and several commendations from the Webber Wentzel ‘Legal Journalist of the Year’ awards. Additionally, she has been honored by the National Press Club in both the Radio and Social Media categories and was named the ‘Rising Star – Women in the Media’ in 2011.
As an author, Mandy’s book ‘Killing Kebble’ was a local publishing sensation, selling over 100,000 copies and being shortlisted for the distinguished ‘Alan Paton Sunday Times Literary Awards’. It was also chosen as Jenny Crwys-Williams’ ‘Book of the Year’ in 2011. Her second book, ‘My Second Initiation’, co-authored with former NPA head Vusi Pikoli, was similarly acclaimed, earning a spot on the Alan Paton shortlist and being named Crwys-Williams’ non-fiction book of the year in 2013. Mandy also served as the series editor for ‘The Youngsters’, a collection of works by young South African voices. In 2014, she published ‘Behind The Door: The Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp Story’ with her colleague Barry Bateman. The book, released internationally, provided exclusive insights into the high-profile trial.
With a social media following of 130,000 on Twitter, Mandy has pioneered live-tweeting court cases and breaking news stories, earning her a place among South Africa’s leading Twitterati.
Mandy holds a BA degree from Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg). She began her career at RAU Radio before interning at the 702 traffic desk and screening listeners’ calls during the early morning hours. She quickly rose through the ranks to become a news reporter at Eyewitness News, where her career flourished.
