Refentse Morake captured hearts with his soulful voice while busking on the streets of Vereeniging. This talented Afrikaans singer was just 17 when a local resident, Cecilia Marchionna (affectionately known as Aunt Kleintjie), heard his music and recorded a video. Little did Refentse know, Aunt Kleintjie’s Facebook post would go viral, garnering 30,000 views in its first day and skyrocketing to 160,000 views within four days.
The power of social media propelled Refentse’s talent onto the national stage. In a heartwarming twist of fate, his idol, Karen Zoid, even came across him performing on the street in Oudtshoorn. Karen not only appreciated his music but also offered him some encouraging words and a R10 bill.
Later that same day, Refentse’s life took another incredible turn. Organizers at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) were so impressed by his talent that they invited him backstage at the opening concert. There, he met Karen Zoid again, along with other music stars, and was offered a record deal!
In just three years, Refentse has become one of South Africa’s most popular and in-demand artists. His talent and genuine passion have captivated audiences across the country, from Die Boer in the Cape to the Free State Arts Festival and Afrikaans is Groot. The runaway success of his first two albums, “My hart bly in ‘n taal” and “Deur my venster” (both achieving double platinum status), cemented his place in the music scene.
