Khayelitsha Youth Choir
Elevating Young Voices!
Founded in October 2018 in Harare, Khayelitsha (formerly known as Isiphiwo Art Group), Khayelitsha Youth Choir (KYC) has grown into a powerhouse of talent and hope. The name change reflects a broader vision, one that aims to uplift and empower the youth of Khayelitsha through the magic of music and the arts, while also providing crucial educational and social support.
A Vision Beyond Music: Mihle Mtitshana, the visionary founder, established KYC not only to nurture musical talent but also to offer a lifeline to young people, some of whom have faced the harsh reality of dropping out of school. By immersing them in music, performance, drumming, and poetry, Mihle has created a vibrant platform that transforms lives, fights youth unemployment, and fosters personal growth.
A Symphony of Talents: With over 60 members aged 14 to 28, KYC’s repertoire is a harmonious blend of traditional choral, pop, and soulful music. Their heartfelt performances are not just about entertainment; they are about connecting, sharing, and inspiring. The choir dreams of traveling across the country and the globe, spreading their love for music and learning from diverse musical traditions to further hone their talents.
Community and Beyond: The choir’s soulful melodies grace numerous events, from weddings and choir competitions to church services. Their performances resonate deeply within their community and beyond.
A Star-Studded Journey: Since forming a partnership with Uthando SA in March 2022, KYC has shared stages with South Africa’s legendary artist PJ Powers and her band. Notably, they wowed audiences at the Table Bay Hotel’s 25th birthday celebration and the prestigious We Are Africa trade show, marking their first professional gig. Thanks to Uthando SA’s township excursions, KYC has become a sought-after ensemble, with events companies and organizers eagerly booking them.
